Cumbrian deli tricks the eye with shop front mural

A Lake District deli has come up with a novel way of boosting footfall – turning its shop front into a work of art.

Joanna Taylor of The Cheese Delicatessen in Keswick commissioned local decorator and mural painter Paul Wilmott to paint a false shop window [pictured] featuring a cheese display on the side of her shop in order to attract customers.

“The shop is situated just off the main street in a shopping courtyard,” she told FFD. “We are the first shop in and are at a slightly different angle to the other shops so can easily be walked straight past when focusing ahead.

“Looking at the wall we decided on a Trompe L’Oeil, which means to deceive or trick the eye. Paul has replicated my original window but put a fantastic display of cheeses, chutneys, oils and vinegars in it.”

Taylor hopes that the mural will help her pull in more passers-by as the tourist season begins in the region.
